Joy Parker: Encounter with Beauty
Encounter with Beauty (1)
I was at the National Gallery of Art looking for an American art piece for an assignment when this caught my eye; a painting. The painting, done by Jasper Francis Cropsey, is named Autumn on the Hudson River. This painting is huge, so I took my time studying every detail. The painting is framed by two trees on the sides that are covered in orange and red leaves, with dead branches and on the left a calming stream, all in the forefront of the painting. Going into it, there is fields of grass, with people doing leisure activities; such as the man and his dog sitting on the pastures, gazing at the horizon. Further into the painting, you see the little town when people were getting established right on the river. The boats are on the Hudson River, while the sun shines through the dark clouds. In that moment taking in the painting, I found the beauty in peacefulness and harmony between nature and human, especially since this was the time lots of war and destruction was going on.
