Aleena Norris 4/4/24: Class Reflection (4/2)

In class on Tuesday, April 2nd, we watched a clip from a film titled "Koyaanisqatsi." The film was created between 1975 and 1982 and is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds, urban life and technology versus the natural environment. The title, "Koyaanisqatsi" is a Hopi Indian word which means "life out of balance."  The clip we watched depicted a scene of a space ship launch, taking off from the Earth. This clip, full of smoke, metal, and bright orange colors, was then juxtaposed with clips of the natural cycles and scenery of our environment on Earth. The film makes you question the purpose and importance of our technological advancements in the world, and the ways in which they harm our natural environment. Clips of nature are visually peaceful and serene, but the music playing in the background instills a sense of fear and unease in the watcher. Is there beauty in urban life and technology? Have we lost our perception of natural beauty in the natural world? The clip to me, serves as a reminder of what we have to lose if we become fully immersed in our urban life, and lose sight of the natural beauty existing around us.
