Impressionistic v.s. Expressionistic- Written April 1

 Impressionistic v.s. Expressionistic

4/5 Assigned class Reading “Introduction to Sacred and Profane Beauty.”

In our class reading "Introduction to Sacred and Profane Beauty," we dived into the differences between impressionism and expressionism. These two art styles have left an impact on the world of art, and it's essential to understand their approaches and significance. Impressionism emerged in the 19th century and is known for its focus on the effects of light and color. Artists like Monet and Van Gogh depicted moments through brushstrokes, often painting outdoors to capture a scene.

Expressionism was prominent in the early 20th century to convey emotional and psychological experiences through bold forms and colors. Artists like Edvard Munch used shapes and bright hues to express turmoil and emotions. Unlike impressionism's focus on visual reality, expressionism offered a subjective view of the world. When analyzing impressionistic and expressionistic art in "Introduction to Sacred and Profane Beauty" readers have insights into artists interpretation and representation. Impressionism celebrates small moments and light, and expressionism delves celebrates the complexities of human experience for viewers to contemplate layers of emotion and meaning in artwork.

Questions after the assignment:
  • What are some more artists I can analyze to see if their art is expressionistic or impressionistic?
  • Is my art more expressionistic or impressionistic?
  • Are my tattoos expressionistic or impressionistic?
