Immigration is a highly debated topic in the United States, often centering on issues like border security, economic impact, and cultural assimilation. However, beyond the political debates and policy talks, there's a reality that often goes unnoticed - the hidden struggles of immigration detention. In her article "Silent Killing: The Inhumanity of U.S. Immigration Detention," Swanson (2019) shines a light on the often overlooked human toll of this system. The U.S. immigration detention centers have faced criticism for their harsh conditions and treatment of detainees. Swanson's research brings to attention the hidden suffering endured by individuals held in detention centers, where basic human rights are violated. From nonproper medical care to overcrowded facilities, the experiences of those detained reveal a dark side to the immigration enforcement system.

One of the most troubling aspects highlighted in Swanson's work is the emotional toll of detention on individuals. The uncertainty, fear, and isolation experienced by detainees can have long-lasting effects on their mental well-being. Many endure trauma, depression, and anxiety as a result of their prolonged confinement, separated from their families and communities. The lack of transparency and accountability within the immigration detention system raises concerns about human rights violations. Reports of abuse, neglect, and even deaths in detention centers show the need for reform and oversight. As a nation built by immigrants, the treatment of those seeking refuge or a better life should reflect American values of compassion, fairness, and respect for human dignity.

Questions after the assignment:
  • How are people allowing people to be treated like this?
  • What other things are going on without us knowing?
  • How can we work to stop this issue?
