Sara Rice: 3/14/24 reading reflection- the role of aesthetics in language (required text)

Upon reading the following excerpt on Hellen Keller’s comprehension of language, and the following writing analyzing this, I feel like it answers the age-old question of “Can people really learn new things?”. Most of the time people believe that we only have a set amount of knowledge in our lifetime and that we can’t push the boundaries of what we innately have in is. However, after reading this and looking at the story of Hellen Keller, I believe that with the use of language that can be used in a universal way we can all increase our knowledge through understanding each other. Our ability to understand other people through their body language or comprehend things, has an innate aspect to it. Our emotions and ability to understand others is part of what makes us human. The ability to understand others and understand language is something so unique and beautiful. In many instances, it takes someone telling us something in a specific way that gives us the “aha moment” of understanding. In this example, Hellen Keller’s ability to finally understand that words had meanings to them she was able to learn. In my opinion, this proves that with determination and assistance, people can learn new things through the use of language when things are explained in a way unique to us.
