Sara Rice: guest lecture reflection- the little things in life
After this guest lecture, it reminded me of the quote “one man's trash in another man's treasure”. A lot of her artwork was based on very niche things, like the roots of certain plants. It really looked into the small things in life, and how they can be interpreted in many ways. Another thought I had while analyzing her artwork was thinking back to those pictures that have a double meaning, where depending on the way you observe it you could see two different animals. The explanation I just gave probably made no sense, so I will attach an example to the end of this entry. Another similar example could be the ink blots that are often commonly shown to determine people’s perspective on specific things. While analyzing her artwork she mentioned she would see a particular thing, “a woman dancing” however, it does not always look like that to everyone. It made me think of the broader thought process that depending on our circumstances is how we interpret things. It made me recall a past lecture where we talked about how the interpretation that everyone has of a “tree” can be different. While referring back to the original quote, I realized that when we can really take the time to stop and think about life, we can find beauty in everything.
