Socialization of Media and the Harm of Beauty- Written March 26

Socialization of Media and the Harm of Beauty

1/5 Students Choice

Social media has become a large part of college life, shaping how students connect and share their experiences. While it's great for staying in touch and getting information, there's a downside. Let's discuss how social media can interfere with the mental and emotional well-being of college students, making it tough to find the balance between online and real-world interactions. The comparison game students use to compare themselves to others damages their self-esteem, leaving them with feelings of anxiety or sadness. The comparisons are paired with the fear of missing out, also known as FOMO when students see all the fun stuff happening without them. It's no wonder some students end up feeling lonely and disconnected.

Students spending too much time on social media can disrupt both their grades and sleep schedule. It's easy to get sucked into endless scrolling instead of hitting the books, leading to poor academic performance. Plus, all that screen time before bed can mess with sleep, leaving students tired and unfocused during the day. Some ways to reduce the ways social media affects students are by taking breaks from social media, practicing mindfulness, and having honest conversations about what's real online. Schools can also help by teaching students how to use social media healthily and offering support.

Questions after the assignment:
  • How does FOMO affect students long term?
  • How does FOMO affect adults in different and the same ways?
  • Is Social Media an overall good or bad thing for people?
