The Spirituality of Dance- Written April 9th

 The Spirituality of Dance

5/5 Assigned class reading “Introduction to Sacred and Profane Beauty.”

Dance is more than movement as it holds a deep significance that transcends cultural boundaries. In the reading "Introduction to Sacred and Profane Beauty," we analyze the spirituality of dance, and how it serves as a medium for connecting with the divine, expressing devotion, and embodying sacred narratives. Across cultures, dance shares the feeling of the divine through its fluidity, grace, and emotive power. Whether in Sufi mysticism or Native American ceremonial dances, each form carries a unique connection. Engaging in dance can be a transformative experience, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. The spirituality of dance is beyond movement by illustrating a deep connection to the sacred. Through the exploration of dance as a sacred art form, we come to appreciate its role as a medium for spiritual expression and communion.

Questions about the assignment:
  • Why do some religions encourage music and dance while other discourage it?
  • How is some dancing spiritual and others not considered spiritual?
  • What are all the emotions that people feel while dancing regardless if it is spiritual or not?
